How it works — 3 steps, ~8 minutes

Pin the extension, click through your product, export a guide. No staging screenshots, no design tools, no manual writing. Each step below links to the detailed guide with screenshots.

01

Record your walkthrough

Click Start Recording, then use your product naturally. Every click is captured — even across page navigation. The REC badge confirms capture is active.

See recording in guide →

02

Edit & annotate

Each step gets an auto-annotated screenshot with arrow and label. Rewrite titles, add context, reorder steps, delete noise. Optional AI drafts copy from click labels.

See editor in guide →

03

Export PDF or Markdown

One click exports a polished guide. Markdown for GitHub/Notion/docs-as-code. PDF for email, onboarding packets, print. Zero cloud dependency.

Built for documentation work

Four high-leverage use cases where DocGen Studio replaces hours of manual work with minutes of recording.

Help-center articles

Capture real UI instead of restaging screenshots. Record the actual flow, get annotated steps automatically, export to Markdown for your docs site.

Internal SOPs

Record an onboarding path once, share forever. New hires follow click-by-click guides. Update in minutes when UI changes.

Support macros

Export annotated steps showing exactly where to click. Reduce support ticket time. Customers follow visual guides instead of text-only replies.

QA walkthroughs

Hand a teammate a click-by-click record of the flow you just tested. Reproducible steps, annotated evidence, no "works on my machine."

Why DocGen Studio over Scribe, Guidde, or Tango?

DocGen Studio is the only free, local-first, developer-focused alternative. No per-seat pricing, no cloud lock-in, no mandatory AI credits. You own your data and your workflow.

Free forever

No subscription, no trial, no credit card. Scribe starts at $29/user/mo; Guidde at $16/user/mo.

Local-first privacy

Screenshots and recordings never leave your browser. Scribe/Guidde upload everything to their cloud.

BYO OpenRouter key

Use any model (including free tiers). No vendor AI markup. Scribe/Guidde bundle AI at premium.

Dual export: PDF + MD

Markdown for docs-as-code workflows. PDF for stakeholders. Most tools only do one.

Focused Crop (60%)

Auto-zoom on clicked element in dense UIs. Critical for complex dashboards where full-tab screenshots are unreadable.

No account required

Install and record immediately. No signup, no email, no team workspace to configure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions. Can't find what you need? Read the full guide or contact us.

Is DocGen Studio free?

Yes, DocGen Studio is completely free. No subscription, no account required, no hidden fees. Optional OpenRouter API key enables AI-assisted drafting (you can use free models on OpenRouter).

What browsers does DocGen Studio support?

DocGen Studio is a Chrome extension. It works on Chrome, Edge, Brave, and other Chromium-based browsers. Firefox and Safari are not supported at this time.

Does DocGen Studio send my data anywhere?

No. All recording, screenshots, and editing happen locally in your browser. Only click labels (e.g., "user clicked a button labeled Save") are sent to OpenRouter if you add an API key. Screenshots never leave your device. See our privacy policy for details.

Can I export both PDF and Markdown?

Yes. Export Markdown for version control (GitHub, Notion, GitLab, Obsidian) or PDF for sharing with non-technical stakeholders. Both formats include annotated screenshots.

How does DocGen Studio differ from Scribe, Guidde, or Tango?

DocGen Studio is free, local-first, developer-focused, and lets you bring your own OpenRouter API key. No cloud dependency, no per-seat pricing, no mandatory AI credits. You own your data and your workflow. See our detailed comparison.

Does DocGen Studio require an account?

No. Install and record immediately. No signup, no email, no team workspace to configure. All data stays in your browser's local storage.

What is Focused Crop (60%)?

Focused Crop zooms the screenshot around the clicked control so the annotation stays readable in dense UIs. Turn it off to keep the entire visible tab. Essential for complex dashboards.

Does recording work across page navigation?

Yes. Recording continues across in-session navigation on the site you are documenting. Stop recording from the popup when the walkthrough is done.

Can I edit AI-generated step text?

Yes. Every step title and instruction is fully editable. You can also reorder or delete steps before you export. AI is a starting point — you control the final output.
